How to play Peg Solitaire

Try Peg Solitaire at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
