How to play Canfield Solitaire

Start Canfield Solitaire by looking at the playing area and its controls. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Compare the situation with the worked example. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
