How to play Nonogram

Nonogram gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Shade the grid so every row and column matches its run-length clues. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Work through a collection of twelve 5×5 picture puzzles.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Shade the grid so every row and column matches its run-length clues. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Cycle a square between filled, crossed and blank.
  2. Keep separate runs apart by at least one blank.
  3. Combine row and column deductions.
  4. Check puzzle verifies the finished grid.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

Clue 2 1 requires a run of two, a blank separator, and a run of one. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Do not merge two separate runs. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
